1.B question - Audience Representation and Media Language?

During the process of my AS media coursework, I created an indie music magazine targeted at an audience demographic of males and females aged 18 – 24, belonging to social classes C1-D. I chose to aim my magazine towards this audience after researching genre conventions for indie music magazines and realising that this is the most common audience demographic used. I looked at real media products such as ‘Q magazine’ and ‘indie magazine’ in order to gain a better understanding on genre conventions, and how I can effectively apply these to my own work. I therefore conducted additional research into audience theory, and looked at Blumler and Katz (1973), and found that my audience would want to read my magazine for entertainment purposes. In reference to my masthead, I wanted a colour that reflected appeal and a relaxed atmosphere in order to suit the indie genre, and I also attempted to create a house style by repeating the use of this colour as my main cover line. I decided that I w...

Media Mock Exam (Technology Question)

'How have your post production digital creative skills developed over time?' Throughout the course of both my AS and A2 media work I have built and developed my digital creative skills, which can be evidenced by the progress and improvement of my work as I became more familiar with various tools and techniques. For both my AS and A2 media coursework I chose to complete the print briefs and I have also volunteered to become Sub - Editor for 'Shine Magazine' (part of a magazine competition offered to participating schools across the country) because I have a dedicated interest in becoming a print journalist. Throughout my AS coursework, after thorough research of audience expectations and genre conventions, I created a music magazine of the indie genre, titled 'Now Indie'. I completed a series of photo shoots, but to make my magazine more unique and appealing I arranged a surrealistic photo shoot involving a model wearing a giant rabbit head along with a dress...

1A. Convention Question

Zoe Stuthridge 1A. Conventions of real media texts/creativity, research and planning For my AS media coursework I created an indie music magazine, titled ‘Now Indie’, aimed at 15- 24 year olds, based on my audience research and planning. For my A2 media coursework I created a regional lifestyle magazine, titled ‘Cornish Life’, following genre conventions and audience expectations. Throughout the planning stages with both my AS and A2 coursework I used various platforms such as ‘Survey Monkey’ in order to understand more about a specific audience demographic for both my magazines. This allowed me to adapt my style in order to appeal to this audience demographic, because I was able to ask a wide group of people what they would like to see in both my AS and A2 magazines. For my secondary research in my AS work, I looked at a wide range of music magazines in order to give me a better idea on the genre I wanted to create. When realising that I wanted to create a magazine relati...

Digital technology & post production

For my media coursework at both AS and A2 level, I chose to complete the print brief tasks in order to ensure that both my written and practical skills were improved. Throughout the creation of my A2 work I participated in a photo shoot that took place at Lanhydrock Throughout my AS and A2 media work I developed a range of practical skills that helped to improve my practical work. One of the main platforms I used when creating my practical coursework was Photoshop, where I relied on a variety of different tools in this platform to improve the quality of my work.  Through using platforms such as Photoshop, Dreamweaver and InDesign, this improved my digital editing skills, as I was using tools in my A2 work that I had not used previously in my AS work. This therefore ensured that I was improving the appearance of my work as I was considering conventions carefully and was using the appropriate tools when necessary. I also used a range of different technology, such as Blogger...

Youth Essay

INTRODUCTION Over the past 100 years, the media has portrayed youth in a mainly negative way for the largest majority of this time period. I am going to explore this question further with reference to various case studies I have been studying from online media, films and newspapers from the last 100 years. I will also make references to the theories of Hall (1904), Medhurst (1998), Cohen (1972), Osgerby (1988) and Hebdige (1998) to support my argument. One example of a film that disrupts the negative portrayal of youth is ‘In which we serve’ (1942), as the film portrayed youth as a positive patriotic representation. This is also supported by a newspaper headline from The Daily Mail (1939) which stated; ‘these men laid down their lives for this country’, (Daily Mail, 1939). This disrupts the theories of Medhurst who said that those who are outside the dominant group are portrayed as; ‘awful because not like us’ (Medhurst, 1998) and Stanley Hall who argued; ‘youths are extreme and ...
